Brands of the Lone Star The Lone Star Ranch had several brands over the years. The Lone Star, or the three point star, was used for branding and identifying animals. This was the horse brand. It was used on the left cheek. The second known brand of the Lone Star was Four Compass Bar, or Split Key Bar, which was a hairpin and bar. This was the cattle brand found on the right side of an animal and which might be associated with the south bend of the Red Deer River which makes a similar hairpin figure. We were told that Murray Stapleton’s brand was the original brand of the well known John Ware who ranched up-river about 30 miles, near Duchess. (present Dinosaur Provincial Park) John Ware was the well-known negro cowboy written about by Grant McEwan. John Ware sold some cows and the brad to Murray Stapleton. (Note 1990: Apparently. this is not correct. Murray did not acquire the Three Walking Sticks brand.
THE LONE STAR HORSE BRAND
The brand is shown above. This is a photograph of a test brand which was burned into the side of a shed in the Dirty Thirties. It is on what is now the Suffield Block. It was used when some animals were bought or sold. A local fellow showed us the location and it is probably still there. |
